The uraeus is the representation of a cobra standing ready to pounce. This cobra is not just any other cobra: it is Wadjet, the protective cobra goddess of Lower Egypt. Wadjet is one of the forms that the right eye of Ra can take. Because of this link between the symbol and this region of Egypt, the uraeus is worn by the Pharaoh to signify that they control Lower Egypt.
